Original Perry's was founded in 1968 by Perry and Sophia Potiris. Perry had a life long history in the restaurant business, starting as a young boy working in his family restaurants in Iowa.
Perry graduated from University of Iowa and enlisted in the US Navy serving as a Medical Corpsman aboard a troop ship in WW2. Stationed in San Francisco, it was here that he met the love of his life, Sophia. Perry and Sophia were married and moved back to his native Iowa to help with the family business.
In the early 50's Perry and Sophia moved to Sacramento to raise their growing family that would include two Daughters and one Son. In 1968 Perry and Sophia, opened Trukadero, ARCO's first of a nation wide chain of Truckstop Coffee Shops.
Because of Perry's unwavering dedication to provide the highest quality meals and service not found in most high end dinner restaurants, Trukadero thrived and guests waited in line for over 30 minutes just to get a seat. In 1973 Perry opened Mr. Perry's, just across the freeway from Trukadero. Perry often said that he would rather be in competition with himself than some other restaurant. Mr. Perry's was a bit upscale from the Trukadero al tho the menus were very similar. It didn't take long for Mr. Perrys to also have a wait to get a seat. In 1980 ARCO made the decision to exit the restaurant business, Trukadero became Original Perry's and continued to thrive.
Today Original Perry's and Mr. Perry's are owned and managed by a young man that at the age of 16 was hired by Perry to work as a busboy...The tradition continues.
